A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
