Australian Tennis Star Kasatkina Announces Career Break Citing ‘Emotional Strain’
The nation's leading women's tennis player has chosen to take a break for the remainder of the 2025 season, stating she is at her “mental and emotional limit.”
Reasons Behind the Announcement
The tennis professional, who this year altered her allegiance to compete for Australia, attributed the change for contributing to significant “psychological strain.”
Further contributors included the persistent struggle of being away from her relatives and the relentless circuit routine.
“I've been far from fine for a extended duration and, to be frank, my results and performances reflect that,” she wrote on social media.
She stated, “The reality is, I've encountered a barrier and am unable to proceed. I need a break. A break from the tedious cycle of life on the tour, the constant packing, the results, the expectations, the familiar opponents (sorry, girls), everything that comes with this life.”
Individual Challenges and Return Plans
“There's only so much I can deal with and take as an individual woman, all whilst competing with the top competitors in the world.”
“Should this be seen as weakness, then so be it, I'm weak. However, I know I am strong and will grow by being away, recharging, reorganizing and revitalizing. The moment has come I paid attention to my instincts for a difference, my mind, my emotions and my physical self.”
Kasatkina decided to change allegiance after departing Russia due to apprehensions about her well-being, having publicly spoken against the country's policies affecting the queer community and the conflict in Ukraine. First living in the Middle East, she moved to her new home and became a permanent resident in early this year.
She later got engaged to companion an ex-Olympic athlete, who won a silver medal for her birth country at the 2018 Winter Olympics after first representing for her native Estonia.
The tennis star also revealed she has been separated from her father, who still lives in her homeland, for an extended period.
Career Context
A Roland Garros final four competitor in 2022, she had finished the previous four seasons among the world's best but is currently outside the top 15 after a mixed season where she had a near-even record.
She is expected to exit the top 20 by the time the home major takes place.
The 28-year-old confirmed she plans to come back in the following season, “refreshed and prepared,” with the lead-in to her local Grand Slam expected to be a comeback goal.
Wider Context
Australia's next best competitor is Maya Joint, holding the 35th position.
She is the third top WTA competitor to end their season early, following other prominent players, amid a notable increase of competitors stopping mid-game.
The tour governing body obligates top competitors to compete in a set number of tournaments, encompassing the Grand Slam events, premier tour stops, and six 500-level tournaments.
But top-ranked player Iga Swiatek remarked in the past, “It's not feasible to fit it all in the schedule. Maybe I will have to select some events and omit them, although they are mandatory.
“We have to be smart about it - not really unfortunately care about the rules and just think what's healthy for us.”
