Final Boat of 42-Strong Pro-Palestinian Naval Mission Intercepted by Israeli Navy
The final ship of the large humanitarian flotilla seeking to break the Israeli decade-plus maritime blockade on the Gaza Strip has been intercepted by Israel's military forces.
Mission Halt and Removal Procedures
Based on government statements, procedures are now underway to expel the around four hundred fifty activists currently in detention. Including those held are several Italian parliamentarians who are anticipated to go back to their home country on a scheduled aircraft.
Last Vessel Information
Recordings from late Thursday showed the remaining ship being operated by half a dozen activists, featuring several Turkey's individuals, a German citizen, and an Oman's activist. The Australian captain of the vessel declared via digital communication: "We have a group of extremely determined Turkish participants onboard... we're planning to continue in our direction."
As stated by a flotilla spokesperson, the ship had entered the flotilla behind schedule after stormy conditions compelled it to go back to port in the Spanish city.
Previous Context
This stoppage signifies the most proximate any unsanctioned aid attempt has come to the Gaza Strip coast since Israel established its sea blockade in 2009. The ship was stopped when it was calculated to be 42.5 nautical miles from the Gaza's waters.
Past efforts by humanitarian workers to breach the sea blockade have been prevented by force. In twenty ten, a dozen Turkey's participants were lost their lives when Israeli commandos stormed the lead ship as it led an humanitarian flotilla toward Gaza.
Additional Ship Information
An additional sailing boat called Mikeno seemed to have crossed into Palestinian territorial waters, waiting nine nautical miles off the beach before being apprehended. Nonetheless, organizers mentioned they had lost communication with the vessel's crew several hours prior.
"It could be a location error or a system issue with the surveillance," stated a spokesperson. "We will only have verification after making contact with the personnel, which is impossible at present as they are being held by Israeli authorities."
Ongoing Situation
The detained activists from the flotilla are being transported to Israel where they will undergo expulsion processes. Multiple individuals on this current mission, featuring high-profile figure the environmental campaigner, have been before held by Israeli forces while attempting to break the embargo.
Historically, protesters apprehended by Israel have not been criminally prosecuted and their involvement has been considered as an border control concern rather than a legal infraction.
